Overview

The FastlinX 5301 is a Fast Ethernet Media Converter that converts transmission signals from a twisted-pair 10/100Base-TX cable to 100Base-FX fiber optic cable. It is used to expand the scope of LAN networks in terms of distances they cover which are otherwise very limited using the existing interconnecting LAN devices, and are especially useful in situations where devices are physically separated by large distances.

The FastlinX 5301 media converter provides a 10/100Base-TX port interface and a 100Base-FX fiber optic port interface. The 10/100Base-Tx port has a RJ-45 connector and a maximum reachable distance of about 100m. The fiber optic port has a SFF-SC connector and a maximum reach of 15 Km; these ports operate at 100Mbps and feature half-duplex and full-duplex operation.

The FastlinX 5301 media converter includes the following models:

Network Topologies

Stand-alone Configuration

The following figure shows a network configuration where two Ethernet switches have been interconnected using a FastlinX 5301 media converter.

In the stand-alone configuration, the FastlinX 5301-1FSF0 must be connected to the Ethernet switch with a SC single fiber module (TX-1550nm, RX-1310nm) and the FastlinX 5301-1FSF1 must be connected to the Ethernet switch with a SC single fiber module (TX-1310nm, RX-1550nm).

Back-to-Back Configuration

The following figure shows two FastlinX 5301 media converters in a back-to-back configuration.

In the back-to-back configuration, the FastlinX 5301 media converters must be used in pairs, that is, a FastlinX 5301-1FSF0 should be used with a FastlinX 5301-1FSF1.

Key Features & Benefits

The FastlinX 5301 media converter provides the following key features:
Support for the new breed of Small Form factor Pluggable (SFP) SC connectors which have higher density panels as compared to the older and larger connectors.
Supports Auto MDI/MDIX feature that enables the media converter to automatically detect and correct a crossed cable.
Support for Auto-Negotiation (IEEE 802.3u) feature enables the media converter to negotiate the speed and the duplex mode status (full-duplex or half-duplex) on the 10/100Base-TX port.
Supports Far End Fault Indication (FEFI) on the 100Base-FX port. FEFI ensures that link failures are reported efficiently to all devices on the network so that network problems can be diagnosed and corrected instantly.
The display LEDs provide immediate visual status of each port.
